RM of BTS: When K-pop Opens the Museum Doors

We know RM as the leader of BTS, the group that helped take K-pop far beyond its borders. Yet behind the enormous stages, albums and crowds, Kim Namjoon has spent years nurturing another passion: looking at art, taking time to understand it, or simply allowing it to move him. In October 2026, that private passion enters a museum. And suddenly a question arises: what happens when a global star invites his audience to look at paintings instead of a screen?

A Deeply Personal Collection

At the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, “RM x SFMOMA: Between You and Me” opened on October 3, 2026, and is scheduled to run until February 7, 2027. It brings works from RM’s collection into conversation with pieces held by the museum. This is not merely an exhibition built around a celebrity: RM has helped shape the presentation and shares his personal relationship with the art. Visitors encounter modern and contemporary Korean artists alongside creators from other places and traditions. The museum becomes a space for conversation rather than a showcase of prestige.

What appeals to me about the idea is its simplicity. You do not have to be an expert to feel something in front of a painting. You may know nothing about its technique, period or even its maker, and still linger over a color, a shape or a silence. RM seems keen to protect that freedom of looking. He is not asking fans to love exactly what he loves; he is opening a door and leaving them free to choose where it leads.

Discovering Another Side of Korea

Through artists such as Yun Hyong-keun and Kim Whanki, the exhibition reminds us that Korean culture cannot be reduced to the songs and television series traveling around the world. It has a rich artistic history shaped by experimentation, tradition and, at times, remarkably restrained gestures. For some international BTS fans, these paintings may be a first encounter with that history. This is where the project becomes meaningful: a musician’s popularity can offer a path toward artists who are less widely known.

When Fans Become Museum Visitors

We often talk about fan communities in terms of numbers, records and social-media excitement. Yet a community can also be united by curiosity. If BTS admirers walk into a museum for the first time because of RM, the event becomes more than a publicity moment. The meeting of pop culture and contemporary art might seem unlikely; here it feels almost natural, because it begins with a genuine and openly shared interest.

There is something joyful about this exchange of perspectives. A teenager who comes for an idol may leave remembering the name of a painter they had never heard of. An art lover may discover another side of a musician they had never listened to. Nobody needs to abandon one passion for another: different worlds meet, enrich one another and start a conversation. Perhaps that is what a successful exhibition does: it gives us one reason to enter and another to carry home.

Art as a Meeting Place

The title “Between You and Me” says a great deal about the project. Between you and me stands the artwork, along with everything each of us brings to it. In a world where images rush past at extraordinary speed, spending a few quiet minutes with a painting can feel surprisingly precious. RM gives that experience exceptional visibility, but the essential moment happens elsewhere: in the silent encounter between a visitor and a work of art. Fame may draw people in; art can give them a reason to stay.
